4 Smart Tips to Keep Your House Cool this Summer

We've got 4 tips to keep your house cool during the hot Madison summer. There's nothing like the long summer days and cool summer nights in Wisconsin to breathe life into your household--until stifling summer temps make you feel like you're baking in your own home. Stay smart this summer with our tips to keep your house cool, and your family comfortable, without sending your power bill through the roof.

1. Give your AC a rest
When temps dip overnight, give your AC the night off by strategically opening windows to let in cool air, then turn on your AC and close the windows in the morning–along with blinds or curtains—to trap cool air inside. For an added boost, try opening windows on opposing sides of your home and installing window fans to make an even bigger difference in the cool airflow in your home overnight. Ceiling fans work wonders, too--just make sure to turn them off when you're not in the room, or you'll waste energy unnecessarily.

2. Rethink your cooking schedule
Love to bake? Try to use your oven more during the mornings and evenings if possible. A hot oven coupled with steamy outdoor temps can send your AC into overdrive, and make it more difficult to keep your house comfortable during the day. Today's Homeowner suggests making it a point to use your range hood whenever you're using your oven in the summer to vent air outside, and if possible, keeping pots covered when using your range to prevent hot, moist air from circulating through your kitchen. Or, better yet, ditch the oven for the grill.

3. Manage humidity wisely
High humidity can sometimes be an unpleasant summer reality. Good Housekeeping recommends bringing some potted plants inside to naturally reduce that sticky, muggy feeling in your home. A dehumidifier is also a worthwhile investment in extreme humid environments. For around $200, you could significantly reduce your home's humidity and make it much more comfortable, even during hot summer afternoons.

4. Install energy efficient windows
When you want to keep your house cool, it's even more essential to make sure that your windows are energy efficient so you're not wasting energy cooling air that's just going to escape. Treated glass options like Renewal by Andersen's SmartSun™ Glass is up to 70% more effective at blocking heat transfer in the summer than its ordinary double-pane counterparts, and would make a good replacement for old, outdated windows. Low-E4 glass comes standard with each new Andersen window, and helps block both thermal transfer and harmful UV rays. Learn whether your windows and doors need energy efficient replacements

Keeping your home cool this summer isn’t rocket science, but it does take a bit of forethought to ensure your family is comfortable day and night. These 4 home cooling tips are a good place to start.
